What a 500-Year Flood Taught Me About the Invisible Enemy Living
Inside Your Walls
It was Memorial Day weekend, 2015.
South Texas was underwater.
I still remember the sound – not the rain, but the silence that came after. The kind of silence that tells you something has gone very wrong.
We were living and working at our resort spa in South Texas – a 4,000 square foot sanctuary that housed the only salt cave in the state. Guests flew in from across the country to experience it. We were fully booked weeks in advance. It was everything we had built.
And in a matter of hours, a flash flood that would go down in history washed through our property.
Families were swept away that night. Lives were lost. What
happened to us was nothing compared to that.
The water rushed in building after building. We watched helplessly as everything we had created filled with water. The storm was so devastating it made national news – the NBC NEWS coverage tells the full story of that night . Luckily, our spa sat on a small hill – we got inches, not feet. But it was enough to soak the floors, creep up the walls and leave behind something far more dangerous than we realized.
The Discovery That Changed Everything
Nine months later, we thought the worst was behind us.
The other businesses on the property were rebuilding. Life was returning to
something that resembled normal. Then the juice bar in our building began
renovations and that’s when the contractor knocked on my door with a look I will never forget.
“You need to strip every wall in this building,” he told me. “There’s black mold growing behind them.”
If you’ve ever been told that, you know the feeling. Your stomach drops. Your mind races to your guests, your staff, your family, your business. Everything you’ve built flashing before your eyes.
But something kept me calm. Something I already knew – deep in my bones – about the 40 tons of pure salt that filled our spa.
“Just show me one wall,” I told him. “Pick any treatment
room. Open it up and show me the mold.”
He looked at me like I had lost my mind. He opened the wall anyway.
Clean.
Pristine. Not a trace of mold anywhere inside that spa.
It was as if the mold had reached the entrance of our salt cave spa and simply… stopped.
The contractor stood there, genuinely confused. I laughed. Because I already knew what 40 tons of salt does to bacteria, viruses and mold. It is their unmatched enemy. Salt naturally inhibits microbial growth; it has been for thousands of years. Our spa had been quietly protecting itself and every single person who walked through our doors, all along.
What Nobody Tells You About the Air in Your Home
Here’s a fact that should stop you cold:
The EPA estimates that indoor air can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. In some cases, up to 100 times worse.
The air inside your home , the air your children breathe while they sleep, the air you inhale every morning can be silently loaded with mold spores, dust mites, pet dander, chemical off-gassing from furniture and paint and bacteria.
And unlike outdoor air, indoor air doesn’t move. It sits. It recirculates. It builds up.
Most people never know. Because you can’t see it. You can’t smell it. You just feel it – in the foggy mornings, the unexplained headaches, the allergies that never quite go away, the sleep that never feels deep enough.
I spent years running a salt cave spa and watching people
walk in congested and walk out breathing freely. I watched
that transformation happen hundreds of times.
What they were experiencing wasn’t magic. It was science.
In a properly designed salt environment, pure salt supports natural negative ionization -a process where negtively charged ions are released into the air. Those ions then attract and neutralize pollutants, allergens and airborne particles, essentially cleaning the air from the inside out. It’s the same phenomenon you feel standing at the edge of the ocean or beneath a waterfall – that involuntary deep breath you take without even thinking about it. That feeling has a name. Now it has a room.
So, What Can You Actually Do?
I spent years after that flood thinking about how to bring the protection of a salt environment into everyday homes – not just luxury spas with 40-ton installations.

That’s why I created the Inspirewall™ Custom DIY Salt Wall System.
It’s a DIY-friendly, modular salt wall panel system that you can install in a
bedroom, a home gym, a sauna, a meditation space, or any room you want totransform into a healthier, more beautiful environment.
No contractor. No renovation. Just real salt, warm LED backlighting and the
same air-purifying negative ion effect that protected my spa through a flood – and through everything that followed.
